Hi, I’m Edward.
As an Architect, I care about building design.
I know the benefits that good buildings bring.
I’ve worked with hundreds of clients during my 30 year career, and understand the process of designing and constructing buildings that fit the clients needs perfectly, whether they are a home owner, self builder, developer or commercial client.
It’s about listening to the client, and empathising with their needs.
Analysing and testing ideas.
Having the clarity of vision to solve problems with creative solutions.
Taking advantage of opportunities, negating constraints, and using my creativity and experience to produce a design that exceeds expectations, gets the approvals required and can be built within budget.
My Approach
My experience includes residential, commercial, education, healthcare and leisure buildings over my 30 year career. I have designed buildings large and small, but the approach is always the same:
It starts with understanding the need, the problem, the existing building, or the site.
Then listening to the client, and working with them to develop an idea of what the building could be like.
I can take the design through the planning and various design stages, from the early concept to the completed building, or just provide input on the stages you need.
It’s a collaborative effort, with the aim of achieving the best building for my clients needs, hopes and budget.
Simple, Elegant design
For me, the best designs are simple and elegant solutions.
It’s about striving for the most appropriate design for every project.
Balancing the form with function.
No more complex than is needed.
Simple to build, cost efficient and low in energy use, and resulting in buildings that are pleasing to the eye, a pleasure to be in, and that improve our lives.
Natural light, good air quality, calming acoustic environment and stable internal temperature are all features I strive for in my designs.
Sustainable design
Buildings should be efficient users of energy, comfortable and healthy environments to live in. As a certified Passivhaus Designer, I have the skills necessary to design to the highest standard of low energy use in the world, the German Passivhaus standard. During my time at University in the 1990s, I was trained under Drs Robert & Brenda Vale, pioneers of sustainable building design, who wrote “Green Architecture” and designed and built their “Autonomous House” during my time there. They influenced my thinking about low energy use in buildings, which is central to every project I design.
As a Certified Passive House Designer, a member of the Association of Energy Conscious Builders (AECB) and the Passivhaus Trust, I am at the forefront of progressive sustainable building design.
Affordable, Professional design
As a sole practitioner, and a fully qualified chartered Architect, I am able to offer professional design services at an affordable cost to my clients, as VAT does not apply to my fees. This is of particular benefit to home owners and self builders. Whilst building a new home is VAT exempt on the cost of building materials, this is not the case for consultants fees. As such my services represent a 20% saving compared with fees from larger architectural companies.
